古畫的鑒別與欣賞 有時可在畫外下功夫
傳聞拍賣張大千一幅《仿石溪》的山水，由於真偽問題，引起一場軒然大波。在法庭上雙方各有陳述,因為買賣雙方都具有專家的鑒定書。畫家作品的真偽確實很難判別，有的真中有假，有的假中有真，個別摹作，功力不在原作之下。比如宋代米芾，一代大家，但他也有摹仿別人的偽作。然而他也有被別人所騙的時候，有一幅《唐明皇幸蜀圖》，他誤鑒為李思訓（世稱大李將軍）的作品，後人據年代推算，李思訓早在「安史之亂」之前的四十年就死了，安能畫此幸蜀之圖。
當年張大千本人，也曾有過摹仿石濤的作品，頗能亂真。當時的前輩畫家和日本專家，都曾被他騙過，此軼事畫壇亦有傳聞。
鑒別古畫有時可在畫外下功夫。明代以前的畫紙，都有麻的成分，到了清初以後，就不見麻了。在折扇上作畫，始於明代成化年間。凡屬尺頁，總是成雙數的，如單數，那就是缺頁了。對聯始於明末，在嘉靖以前的對聯，就靠不住了。
還可關注印章。關於印章用的印泥，最初是朱墨並用，是用白芨水或蜜汁調色蓋用的，實際上是水印，油印是北宋以後才用，而用艾絨摻和是始於元代，待到普遍使用時，已屬明代中期的萬歷年間了。還有，凡畫仕女或花朵而用鉛粉打底的，則是在乾隆年間才開始的，所以明代作品上出現鉛粉，必是贗品無疑。
作品有偽還因為代筆之作屢見不鮮。大約因作者事務繁忙，精力不繼，而求索盈門，出於無奈，往往由學生，兒子代書代畫，然後自己題款。這種作品中，假中有真，真中有假。據傳王羲之的代筆者為張翼，宋代馬遠的代筆者是他的兒子馬麟，文徵明的代筆者為朱子朗，而唐伯虎則往往請自己的老師周臣代筆，董其昌的代筆者為趙左。清代劉墉書法的代筆者，竟是他的三個侍妾，名喚月華、春曉、四姐，三人輪流代勞。
